Larger Platters

These are made from various stoneware clays rolled out and either pressed into a mould or laid in a kind of purpose-made hammock. Once the clay is leather-hard, the pieces are removed and manipulated or otherwise worked on.

Some are worked on while rather wetter, still in the mould.
For instance, the Flames series and the Dancers are made by inlaying one clay into another of a different colour (eg.red and black stonewares). The surface is then heavily burnished with a spoon, sometimes leaving a trail which records the energy put into integrating the two clays to produce the design. These platters are usually finished with a transparent glaze for culinary use, eg. as fruit dishes.

For other pieces, matt coloured glazes are worked into a pitted, scraped or incised surface, then scraped off again, leaving bare the natural stoney top surface.
